Type 2 AC Charging for BYD Owners in the Philippines: Portable, Wall Charger and Public Sockets

By BYDPH.org editorial · version 1 · Nov 02, 2026 · older version (current)

Type 2 is the AC plug used for home, mall, hotel and office charging in the Philippines. This guide explains how it differs from CCS2 DC, what limits AC speed on a BYD, and how portable, wall and public AC charging compare.

Type 2 is the everyday AC charging plug in the Philippines. If you charge at home, at a mall or at a hotel, you are almost certainly using it. This guide explains what it is, what actually limits your charging speed, and how portable, wall and public AC charging compare.

What Type 2 is

Type 2 is a round connector with seven pins, used for AC charging. Under the Department of Energy's connector guidelines, the Philippines has standardised on Type 2 for AC and CCS2 for DC fast charging, as summarised by the third-party site Expressway.PH.

BYD Cars Philippines lists the Seagull, Atto 3, Seal and eMAX 7 as using Type 2 for AC and CCS2 for DC. Our separate guide covers [CCS2 fast charging](/kb/ccs2-dc-fast-charging-a-practical-guide-for-byd-owners-in-the-philippines/).

AC versus DC in one minute

With AC charging, the power goes through your car's onboard charger, which converts it to DC for the battery. That conversion is the bottleneck, which is why AC is slower and best suited to overnight or long-parking charging. With DC fast charging, the station does the conversion and feeds the battery directly.

A CCS2 inlet has the Type 2 shape plus two extra DC pins, so a CCS2 car can also charge at Type 2 AC points. A car with a Type 2-only inlet cannot use CCS2 DC chargers.

Your car sets the AC speed

A bigger charger does not make AC charging faster than your car allows. BYD Cars Philippines lists up to 7 kW AC for the Seagull, Atto 3, Seal and eMAX 7. For the Atto 2, launch coverage reports 7 kW AC for the EV and 3.3 kW AC for the DM-i plug-in hybrid.

Real-world examples from official and press sources:

  • BYD Cars Philippines says a 7 kW charger takes an Atto 3 from 0 to 100% in roughly 8 to 10 hours.
  • Launch coverage of the Atto 2 EV reports about 7.4 hours for 0 to 100% on AC.
  • Launch coverage of the Atto 2 DM-i reports about 2 hours from 15% to 100%, because its battery is much smaller.

Times vary with the model, battery size, starting charge and supply conditions. Treat them as rough guides, not promises.

Three ways to charge on AC

Portable charger. A cable with a control box that plugs into a household socket. Expressway.PH describes portable AC as roughly 2 kW, suitable for emergencies, low daily mileage and overnight top-ups. BYD Cars Philippines says free portable and wall chargers come with the vehicle for select models, so confirm with your dealer what came with your specific model and variant.

Wall charger (wallbox). A fixed unit, typically 7 kW at home. Expressway.PH lists wallboxes in the 7 to 22 kW range, but your car only accepts what its onboard charger allows. Have a licensed electrician install it and check that your home supply can handle the load. Do not wire or modify charging equipment yourself.

Public AC points. Found at malls, hotels, offices and other destinations. Expressway.PH notes that some public AC stations are socket-only, so you may need to bring your own Type 2 cable. Check the station listing before you go, and confirm whether the point is free, paid or limited to customers.

Good AC charging habits

BYD Cars Philippines suggests charging overnight at home when possible, keeping day-to-day charge between about 20% and 80%, and using DC fast charging mainly for road trips. It also states that its battery management systems prevent overcharging. For your model's exact guidance, check the owner manual or ask an authorized BYD service center.
