If Your BYD Is Caught in a Flood: Parking, What to Do, and Who to Call

By BYDPH.org editorial · version 1 · Nov 04, 2026

Floods are a major risk to any car in the Philippines. This guide follows BYD Cars Philippines' own advice on where to park, why not to drive through floodwater, what not to do to a flooded car, and who to call.

Floods are one of the biggest risks to any car in the Philippines, and the safest steps are the same for BYD owners: stay out of floodwater, park high, and never start or move a flooded car. This guide follows BYD Cars Philippines' own advice and tells you who to call.

Model scope: general guidance for BYD vehicles sold in the Philippines (electric and plug-in hybrid). Always follow your own owner's manual.

Before the storm: where you park

BYD Cars Philippines advises avoiding low-lying areas and basement garages during storms. If your parking spot is at risk of flooding, follow your owner's manual for disconnecting the 12-volt accessory battery. Moving the car to higher ground early is the simplest protection.

Press coverage adds two common-sense tips: keep the charging port closed and covered, and avoid charging during a typhoon or heavy rain, especially with an exposed charger (Manila Bulletin). These are general press advice, not a BYD instruction, so check your manual.

On the road: do not drive through floodwater

BYD's guidance is blunt: never drive through flooded roads. Even water that looks shallow can make a car stall or lose traction, and water can damage electrical systems. BYD also says its vehicles are built with sealed electrical components for heavy rain, which is not the same as being safe in floodwater.

Some press articles quote wading depths in millimetres. We could not trace those figures to a named engineer or to BYD, so we do not repeat them. Treat any water on the road as a reason to turn around.

If the car stalls in floodwater, GMA News reports BYD's advice as: turn it off, do not restart it, get out and move to higher ground. Your safety comes before the car.

After flooding: what NOT to do

BYD Cars Philippines tells owners:

  • Do not switch the vehicle on, even if it looks normal.
  • Do not touch high-voltage or damaged electrical components.
  • Do not push, tow or move the car yourself.
  • Take photos or video of the damage if it is safe to do so.
  • Disconnect the 12-volt battery only if BYD Roadside Assistance or a technician tells you to, and only once the water has gone down and it is safe.

A GMA News explainer on flooded vehicles generally lists disconnecting the battery as a step. BYD's own page is more careful, so for a BYD, follow BYD's instruction and wait for the roadside team or technician.

Also do not plug the car in to charge before it has been inspected. ACMobility's advice is to check the charging port, underside and cabin for water, and watch for warning lights, before plugging in.

Who to call

BYD Cars Philippines lists BYD Roadside Assistance as available 24/7:

  • Landline: (02) 8459-4755
  • Mobile: (+63) 917-178-7434 (calls and Viber only; SMS is not supported)

BYD gives an average response time of 40 to 60 minutes and says roadside assistance covers up to three service events per year. You or an authorized representative must be present with the vehicle. Check the BYD page for the latest numbers before you need them, and save them in your phone.

Repair or replace?

The Automobile Association of the Philippines, quoted by GMA News, suggests getting a repair estimate first and being practical about whether repair makes sense. Ask your insurer and your authorized BYD service center what is covered. We did not find a BYD Philippines statement on warranty coverage for flood damage, so ask in writing.

After driving through deep water

If your car went through deep water and seems fine, have a BYD service center check it. The Manila Bulletin and BYD both say hidden moisture, for example under floor mats or around the battery compartment, can cause problems later.
